How to Improve the Energy Efficiency of Your Swimming Pool

It’s said that the two biggest investments you’ll make in your life are buying a home and buying a car. But we’d like to nominate swimming pools as a close third. Whether it’s to give your family more summer fun, to keep yourself more active, to have a place to entertain your guests, or all of the above, you made the investment in your pool for very good reasons. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to reduce the ongoing maintenance costs of your pool. By making your pool more energy efficient, you not only make it more environmentally friendly, you make it less expensive to run.

Here are just a few ways you can increase your pool’s energy efficiency.

1. Always Use a Solar Blanket

It’s tempting to leave it off overnight when you know you’ll be using the pool tomorrow. But every moment that your pool isn’t covered with a solar blanket is a moment when you’re losing costly heat needlessly.

2.

Practice Good Pool Maintenance

If a well-oiled machine works more efficiently, the equivalent for your pool is regularly (daily if that’s how often you’re using the pool) cleaning your filters, skimmer basket and pump basket; regularly cleaning the pool itself; and regularly balancing your water chemistry.

3. Think About a Blocking the Wind

Especially if your pool is in a larger, wide-open area, winds blowing across the surface of your pool can increase water evaporation and heat loss. If you don’t like the idea of a wind-break fence near your pool, foliage or landscape features can be a more natural looking alternative.

More Than Just Energy Savings

If you’re still not convinced that making your pool more energy efficient can cut down costs, here’s one more. By not having to heat your pool as much and by running more efficiently, your pool equipment will need fewer repairs and last longer too!
