Don’t Close The Pool Too Early
Typically, pool season runs from April until September. Many individuals tend to winterize their pool after Labour Day weekend. You want to do so when the temperature averages below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. If you close it when the weather is still warm, you might end up with algae growth occurring in the pool. Algae thrives in warm environments, so ensure you monitor the weather prior to closing.
You should also make sure your pool is not open when temperatures dip below freezing. For these reasons, you have to make sure to close the pool at the proper time.
Close The Pool At Least A Week In Advance
You should start prepping your pool for the winter months in advance. You have to test the pool water to ensure it is balanced, clean the pool and pool equipment, and shock the pool. All of these steps require time and need to be done properly. So, to protect your pool from any damage during the winter, make sure you put time aside to winterize the swimming pool properly.
Clean All The Pool Equipment
You do not want to leave the pool equipment dirty all winter long. You will have more work if you leave it until the following season. If you choose not to clean the pool equipment, you might also risk possible damage like corrosion or dirt build-up happening to the equipment. Ensure the pool pumps, filters, heaters and chlorinators are clean. Also remember to turn off all pool power circuits for the winter!
Keep The Cover Clean
Your winter pool cover is what protects your pool for the winter. It covers it and ensures no debris or snow gets into the pool and damages it. When the snow starts to melt, make sure you try to keep the top of the cover as clean as possible. Try to remove any melted water and any debris to prevent any damages to the cover. This will keep everything clean and make the step by step process of opening your pool easier.
Check The Water Occasionally
Although the pool cover will be in place and all steps to closing a pool are completed, there is still a bit of maintenance needed. Make sure the water level doesn’t sink too low and check the water to ensure no algae or bacteria has built up. When the weather gets warmer, you want to monitor the chemical balance in the water and keep at proper levels.
You do not need to check the water every other day. Check monthly and when the temperature starts to warm up, check weekly. It is better to stay on top of pool maintenance than to leave it all until the last minute.
